Product description

The eagle is the sacred animal of Jupiter and symbolizes his supremacy and prophetic power. In the Roman auspicia system, where birds were used to interpret the will of the gods (based on the Etruscans), the eagle held a special significance. Jupiter, originally a sky god, is often depicted with these symbols. A common image is that of an eagle holding a lightning bolt in its talons, a combination frequently seen on coins and other artworks.

Although the aquilifer ranked below the centurio (centurion), he was still considered one of the highest-ranking officers within the legion. He enjoyed prestige and authority, partly because he received double pay. The status of the aquilifer went far beyond that of an ordinary standard-bearer. He embodied the honor, spirit, and identity of the entire legion. As long as the aquila remained upright on the battlefield, the morale of the legion stayed intact. It served as a visible beacon of courage and loyalty to Jupiter and Rome. Therefore, on the shoulders of the aquilifer rested not only a physical weight but also an immense symbolic burden—the weight of the entire Roman Empire. Aquilifers were likely chosen from among legionaries who distinguished themselves through acts of bravery.

The loss of an aquila was a great disgrace, while recapturing it from the enemy was considered a major victory. In peacetime, the aquila was stored along with the signa in a central location within the camp.

This highly detailed aquila is entirely handcrafted from brass. It is so detailed that even the feathers are clearly visible.
This eagle weighs 4.4 kg. The wooden shaft can be disassembled into two parts and is equipped with a sturdy handle. The entire aquila measures 217 cm in length and weighs 7.8 kg.
