Monsters in the LARP & fantasy world

LARP en fantasy monsters

Monsters might be the most challenging characters to portray in costume to put down. But a good monster can go in many directions and earns a lot of respect. Here is a brief overview of the most common monsters from the fantasy world.

Manticore

Manticores are monstrous hybrids with the body of a lion, the head of a person, the wings of a dragon, and a tail that fires deadly spikes. They are intelligent man-eaters who often rule over other evil creatures to satisfy their greed and hunger. They make excellent end bosses at low to medium level with great role-playing potential!

Ogres

Ogres are simple, brutal monsters that will often attack and eat everything in their path, considered the lowest of the giant kin. They are often used by other evil creatures as beasts and guards, rewarded with human-like flesh and shiny trinkets. They make great low bosses or mid-level regular enemies, or NPC's with great role-playing potential!

Gnoll

Gnolls are devilish hyena monsters driven by bloodlust and hunger. They roam the wilderness in savage packs, often raiding towns and villages. Even among orcs and goblins, Gnolls are notorious for leaving no survivors or corpses behind. They make great enemies from low to medium level, largely finding their strength in their numbers! Witherlings are undead gnolls, reanimated by malevolent necromancy. They serve the other gnolls in a pack.

Githyanki

Githyanki are feared psionic pirates who dominate the wilderness in spacefaring ships. They harbor a deep hatred against Mindflayers, who once brutally enslaved them. Their culture of raiding and conquest values only strength, and they learn from a young age to fight to the death. They provide formidable regular enemies from medium to high level, especially in campaigns focused on spelljammer setting or planar travel!

Kuo-Toa

Kuo-Toa are amphibious fish-men from the dark, driven to madness by the influence of malevolent spirits. In their madness, they have invented new gods, to whom they devoutly pray. They provide great enemies from low to medium level in adventures with a dark or cosmic horror theme!

Dragon

Dragons are intelligent magical creatures as old as the world itself. They come in many colors and forms, although most are either evil-aligned chromatic dragons or good-aligned metallic dragons. They have the ability to cast powerful spells and breathe pure elemental magic.

White Dragons

are the most animalistic of the evil dragons, making their lairs in icy caves and primarily hunting to survive in frigid climates. Their breath is like a storm of primordial frost.

Green Dragons

are masterful liars, making their lairs in swamps. Instead of simply hiring goons, they enjoy deceiving ordinary people into carrying out evil schemes under the impression they are doing the right thing, to the dragon's sadistic delight. Their breath is a massive spray of deadly poison.

Copper Dragons

are benign pranksters who appreciate jokes and art as much as gold. They make their lairs in rocky deserts and repel intruders with a breath of burning acid and harmful gas.

Silver Dragons

are a regal yet curious type of dragon, who have such a great interest in human societies that they often spend their long lives disguised among ordinary people, inventing new aliases over time. Their good nature drives them to take the vulnerable under their wing and defeat wrongdoers with their breath of deadly frost.

Gold Dragons

are the wisest and strongest of all dragons and dedicate their long lives to fighting injustice and eradicating evil. They will share their knowledge with worthy adventurers and will not hesitate to unleash a blazing inferno upon their enemies.

As the most iconic creatures of the fantasy genre, dragons make for extraordinarily memorable end bosses from medium to high level, as well as NPC's of high level, both with endless roleplay potential!

Zombie

Zombies are undead monsters reanimated by malevolent magic. They are the shuffling remnants of ordinary humans and other creatures who found themselves on the wrong end of a necromancy spell. 9 out of 10 sinister cults agree that they make great low-level monsters that overwhelm players in nightmarish hordes!

Hag

Hags are eldritch fey creatures that take the form of malevolent crones from classic fairy tales and nightmares. They are grotesque witches who deceive and curse the unsuspecting with sinister bargains. Their wicked schemes inspire folk tales warning against dark forests and stinking swamps. They make excellent enemies from low to medium level with great roleplay potential, especially in campaigns with (folk) horror and mythology themes's!

Skeleton

Skeletons are undead monsters reanimated by evil magic. They are the long-expired shuffling remnants of forgotten warriors who found themselves on the wrong end of a necromancy spell. 9 out of 10 sinister sects agree that they make great low-level monsters that overwhelm players in nightmarish hordes!

Golem

Golems are magical automatons determined to execute the will of the magicians who gave them life. They are emotionless and lack any personal will, making them excellent servants for powerful sorcerers, as well as eternally obedient guardians of ancient tombs.

Flesh Golems

are gruesome experiments brought to life by less than savory magic.

They are stitched together from remnants of corpses, protected by a thick, magically resistant hide.

Stone Golems

offer the ideal solution for wizards who need both a magical guardian and a beautiful statue. They last the longest of all golems and are often overgrown with the moss, fungi, and plants of bygone times.

Clay Golems

are the easiest to make and the most classic type of golem.

They are often hastily made by good wizards to protect settlements from attackers.

The versatility and neutral nature of the golem offer endless possibilities during battles, explorations, and role-playing games!

Troll

A colossal figure, thick leathery skin, and grotesque facial features. Trolls are terrifying creatures that inhabit the darkest corners of mystical forests and treacherous mountains. These creatures have an insatiable hunger and often prey on unsuspecting travelers or even other fantastic creatures, satisfying their voracious appetite with a gruesome feast. Yet, trolls are not merely mindless savages. They possess a primitive intelligence, capable of crude speech and rudimentary problem-solving. Despite their cruel appearance and reputation, some stories tell of trolls displaying a twisted sense of humor, playing with their victims before delivering a crushing blow. They are cunning in their own way, setting traps and ambushes to ensnare those who dare to cross their territory.
