Product description
The kopis was a single-handed Greek weapon with a forward-curving, single-edged blade. Originally, the term referred to a heavy cutting knife used for butchering meat and making ritual sacrifices, but it later came to denote this type of sword as well. The name derives from the Greek kopis (κοπίς), from koptō (κόπτω), meaning “to cut” or “to strike.”
The origin of the kopis is debated: some point to Etruscan examples from the 7th century BC, but this remains a matter of scholarly discussion.
This kopis is based on originals dating to around 200 BC. The brass grip is decorated with an animal head and abstract geometric motifs in the Iberian artistic style. The semi-sharp blade is made from tempered 1065 carbon steel with a hardness of 48–52 HRC. This ancient sword comes complete with a leather scabbard. A beautiful display piece for enthusiasts of Roman, Greek, and Celtic swords, and a perfect addition to any reenactment outfit. When the edge is blunted, it makes an excellent battle-ready sword for sword fighting.
